“The Art & Soul of Shreveport – Journey from Africa to America”

Journey to discover the “Art & Soul” of the African and African American experience at the Southern University Museum of Art Shreveport located in the heart of the West Edge Arts district in downtown Shreveport, Louisiana. Explore the art and artifacts from the major art-producing regions in West and South Africa, while ‘feeling the beat’ of the drum circle. Experience the stories, sights, and sounds of black life in America, as well as Shreveport through the lens of art and culture. Unleash your own art and soul.
Pricing per person: $15- drum circle or Adinkra artwork, $20 both, $5 add-on refreshments

Minimums:  10 • Maximums:  30

Tuesdays-Thursdays (10 AM-4PM);
Fridays (9 AM-12 Noon);
Saturdays (By appointment); special times can be arranged as needed

Harriet Tubman and The Underground Railroad

Explore the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman, the woman called Moses, who was the most well-known conductor of the Underground Railroad. Born into slavery, she escorted over 300 slaves to freedom, and “never lost a passenger”. During the Civil War, she worked as a spy, a cook, and nurse for the Union Army. Enjoy a powerful dramatic interpretation about this beloved heroine’s life and learn about the roles quilts and Louisiana played in the Underground Railroad.

Madam CJ Walker-The Beauty of a Self-Made Millionaire

Discover the life of Louisiana native Sarah Breedlove, best known as Madam CJ Walker. Born the daughter of sharecroppers, she started the first and most successful hair care products for black women. Madam CJ Walker became the world’s first known female African American millionaire! Enjoy learning how one woman’s dream changed the beauty industry, as well as the beauty and art of African hair styles and headdresses through inspiring dramatic interpretation!

Clementine Hunter-From the Fields to Folk Art

Take a journey down Cane River to learn about the life and times of Louisiana’s favorite folk artist, Clementine Hunter. Discover her path to painting—from working in the cotton fields to teaching herself how to tell stories through art. Enjoy learning about plantation life and Creole culture, as well as Clementine Hunter’s historic achievements in Louisiana and beyond.
