Exhibits

The Southern University Museum of Art Shreveport (SUMAS) features permanent, traveling, and special exhibitions that preserve and advance the rich cultural arts heritage of Africans and Africans Americans.

Our permanent exhibition showcases African art and artifacts from the major art producing countries in West Africa including: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Nigeria and South Africa. Through our vast permanent collection, SUMAS brings African art and culture to North Louisiana.

Our traveling exhibitions features a range of contemporary artwork inclusive of rotating exhibits from our Baton Rouge campus museum, as well as pop-up exhibitions highlighting local, regional, and national artists.

Our special exhibitions feature artistic, cultural, and historical creations that enhance the awareness and understanding of African and African American experiences within the city of Shreveport, the state of Louisiana, and throughout the United States and beyond.

Interactive Experiences

The Art of History offers a living history and dramatic performance highlighting the cultural and artistic contributions of prominent African Americans throughout Louisiana and American History including rotating characters:

Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, Madam CJ Walker, Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Clementine Hunter.

The Art of History performances are scheduled Wednesday-Friday with scheduled bookings 1-2 weeks in advance. A minimum of 20 people are required to schedule a performance. Admission is $7 per person (includes tour, performance, and art activity). 1 FREE chaperone admission for every ten people. Additional chaperone(s) admission: $5 per person.

Harriet Tubman and The Underground Railroad

Explore the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman, the woman called Moses, who was the most well-known conductor of the Underground Railroad. Born into slavery, she escorted over 300 slaves to freedom, and “never lost a passenger”. During the Civil War, she worked as a spy, a cook, and nurse for the Union Army. Enjoy a powerful dramatic interpretation about this beloved heroine’s life and learn about the roles quilts and Louisiana played in the Underground Railroad.

Madam CJ Walker: The Beauty of a Self-Made Millionaire

Discover the life of Louisiana native Sarah Breedlove, best known as Madam CJ Walker. Born the daughter of sharecroppers, she started the first and most successful hair care products for black women. Madam CJ Walker became the world’s first known female African American millionaire! Enjoy learning how one woman’s dream changed the beauty industry, as well as the beauty and art of African hair styles and headdresses through inspiring dramatic interpretation!

Clementine Hunter: From the Fields to Folk Art

Take a journey down Cane River to learn about the life and times of Louisiana’s favorite folk artist, Clementine Hunter. Discover her path to painting-from working in the cotton fields to teaching herself how to tell stories through art. Enjoy learning about Creole culture, plantation life, and Clementine Hunter’s historic mark in Folk Art.
